It is the year 2021 as the world continues to recover from the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic across the globe, all of a sudden companies hamper around looking to replace a lot of developers who got laid off in the thick of the pandemic.

On this premise that I and my team signed up to learn Frontend development, a skill that would see us create the next Web 4 with humans lying in pods and working in the metaverse…

What fun! Literally 😂

So, at this stage, you might be wondering what SideHustle Internship is? Or perhaps you’re a Frontend developer in need of an internship? If so, this is for you.

In this article, we will be writing about our experience as a team learning core Front-end development technologies (Html, CSS, Tailwind, and Javascript) and participating in the Side Hustle internship. We will take a look at;

Ready? Let’s get rolling

What is Frontend Development?

Front-end web development, also known as client-side development is the practice of producing a graphical user interface using core technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a website, mobile, or Web Application so that users can view and interact with that website or App.

So, literally, this means developing all the aesthetics and visible parts of the web page that the user can ONLY interact with.

Now, you know what Frontend development is, next is mastering the minimum technologies required to make you a Frontend developer. These are:

  • HTML
  • CSS (Tailwind)
  • JavaScript

Now, I needed to point this out, I and my team chose to learn an additional CSS framework which here is Tailwind, just to help us build better Front-end designs.

You don't need to freak out cos this is just a highly customizable, low-level CSS framework that gives you all of the building blocks you need to build bespoke designs without any annoying opinionated styles you have to fight to override with the traditional CSS.

Yeah literally!

Experience as an Individual in SideHustle Internship

It’s been four weeks and counting since the Side Hustle internship started, I have learned a lot and met a lot of wonderful people. I will say the first-week experience was rough as everyone was trying to settle into the workspace.

I also learned a lot about people’s differences and how to cope with individuals coming from diverse backgrounds and working together at the same pace. It also helped me improve my version control skill too.

Team Experience in SideHustle Internship

Group number 25!

The very best out there…

To be honest, this was the most fun-filled team in the Side Hustle Internship. Literally! We might not have the most grounded knowledge of what we were embarking on but we always found a way to get the job done.

Our first Capstone project was a success though I won’t forget in a hurry how a fellow member reportedly pushed some random Jpegs and codes to our Repository in git and in the process overridden all we’ve taken the week to work on.

We all went mad!

and to cap it off, this person couldn't be traced but we all understood, it might have been a co-member ”Agent fisher working behind the scenes” to practice what we’ve been learning all week.

Thanks to Github’s version control abilities, we were able to get that sorted out in real-time.

Here is some feedback from the team:

I never knew about TAILWIND CSS before, but through this internship, I have come to know about it. It’s an amazing framework. Though I have never worked on a group project before, I have learnt a lot from my colleagues through this platform that Side Hustle Internship introduced, I can now say, my skills in frontend development have improved a lot.

I started learning HTML and CSS via Youtube but then, SideHustle Internship program provided the cutting edge. It also linked me up with other interns, most of whom are geniuses and are always ready to get stuck in anytime, should you need them. My experience with side hustle has been astonishing so far, and I’d readily recommend the Internship program to anyone.

I’ve been looking for opportunities to build and improve my web development skills. The classes have been well designed to take anyone who’s interested from beginner level to an intermediate understanding so that they could continue practicing and building on their skills. The mentors are wonderful and the way they’ve been able to maintain order and organization is one thing I must really commend them for. It has made the experience far less overwhelming.. and much easier to manage and navigate.

Each week came with its challenges. Learning CSS Tailwind and JavaScript was the height of it. It takes a lot of understanding and patience. We had our capstone project where we had to team up. It was amazing as I had to work with other like minds. We worked using Github, a very beautiful experience and insightful tool as I didn’t know anything about it prior to the internship. In a nutshell, learning frontend has taught me how to think creative ways of solving problems. I can’t wait to see what the remaining days of the internship holds for me.

Overall, this has been one of the most exciting and amazing Internships and learning phases for us all. Though it’s worth pointing out that there were a lot of ghost members, it hasn't taken the shine off what has been an amazing journey for us all.
